Wisdom tooth extraction is a surgical procedure that requires some post-operative care so the chance of infection is reduced and also to prevent any other complications. We will place a gauze pad over the extraction site immediately after surgery. This should not be removed for at least 45 minutes and can then be discarded. Refrain from rinsing your mouth or drinking from a straw. This is to ensure that the blood clot which has formed will not be dislodged. On the day of the extraction, please limit your activities, you can resume your regular activities the following day. Take pain medication as prescribed, as this will help to reduce the amount of discomfort you may feel after the local anesthetic wears off. As with any oral surgery, refrain from drinking through a straw as doing so creates suction and may disrupt the sutures.
