General Dentistry Q & A

General dentistryWhat Is Done During a Dental Exam?

Regular exams, or checkups, are very important and will begin with collecting the patient’s dental and medical history. Certain conditions and situations will make a person more likely to develop tooth decay or gum disease and it will be important for the doctor to know if any of these apply to the patient. For instance, if the patient has diabetes the doctor will pay special attention because he or she will be at a higher risk than a typical patient. A physical examination will also be performed to check for any issues. The cleaning will help to rid the patient of any bacteria or plaque which they couldn’t clean on their own. X-rays may also be performed. Oral cancer screening may also be done if it is the right time for the patient. Changes to dental hygiene routines which need to be made will also be discussed with the patient.

How Frequently Should I Visit the Dentist for an Exam?

The American Dental Association has recommended that adults and children visit the dentist’s office for a thorough cleaning and oral exam every six months, or twice a year.

How Can I Help Keep My Teeth Healthy?

It is very important to maintain the proper oral hygiene habits between cleaning to prevent the build-up of plaque or tartar. Decay and gum disease can be prevented with these hygiene routines. If the doctor suggests any specific products or tools, follow the recommendations. Avoiding sugary foods and beverages will help to prevent the growth of bacteria which damage teeth. Impacts to the mouth can break or chip teeth so be sure to wear a mouth guard when involved in those types of activities. If you have been diagnosed with bruxism, or teeth grinding, wear a mouthguard at night. Prying off lids and chewing on hard candy or ice can also damage teeth and should be avoided.
