Periodontics Q & A

What is Periodontic Medicine?

Periodontic medicine, or periodontics, is a dental area of study which focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of periodontal disease, often referred to as gum disease. Root planing and scaling, gum grafting, and laser gum surgery are all treatments used under the service of periodontics. Osseous surgery which replaces lost gum and bone tissues is frequently performed as a periodontic treatment.

What Causes a Person to Develop Gum Disease?

Poor oral health care habits usually cause the development of gum disease. Bacteria build up along the gum line and aren’t removed during regular brushing. This area can be difficult to clean because when teeth aren’t cared for plaque develops which can then harden into tartar and the bacteria accumulate underneath it. The area where the teeth meet the gums and between teeth are also common places where bacteria gather. When the number of bacteria goes up, so does the amount of toxins released. These toxins cause the gums to recede. This makes more of the tooth accessible by bacteria. When left untreated, bacteria reach the tooth root. This can cause it to become loose or fall out.

What Symptoms Does Gum Disease Present with?

Symptoms will depend on how severe the condition has become. In milder cases, it usually causes few symptoms. As the condition becomes more serious, the symptoms can include:

  • Bleeding gums, namely when brushing
  • Tender, red, and swollen gums
  • Receding gums
  • Hot and cold sensitivity
  • Tooth aches
  • Infections or abscesses near tooth roots
  • Loose teeth

When the condition become serious it can result in tooth loss. In fact, it is the number one cause of tooth loss in the U.S. To ensure your teeth and gums stay healthy, checkups and cleanings should be performed twice a year. You can also help to prevent gum disease by maintaining good dental hygiene habits and limiting sugary foods and beverages.
