Porcelain Veneers Q & A

Porcelain VeneersWhat are Dental Veneers?

Veneers are designed to strengthen teeth and cover the front surfaces. They are made of thin layers of either composite material or porcelain. Veneers will look like a natural tooth and can be tinted to match the surrounding teeth. Porcelain veneers are traditionally used because they are very durable while still providing a natural look. They can:

  • Cover gaps and pits
  • Hide stains
  • Repair chips and cracks
  • Correct teeth which appear short
  • Even out tooth edges
  • Make teeth appear straighter

What is the Veneer Process Like?

Teeth will first be cleaned and then prepared by shaving down a thin layer of the tooth to make room for the veneer. This makes sure that the dental veneer lies flat next to the original teeth. An impression of the affected tooth is made and sent to a dental lab where they will construct the veneer to match the curves and dips in the impression. During the waiting period, a temporary veneer will be worn. Then at the second appointment a strong dental bonding agent is used to adhere the permanent veneer. The porcelain is then buffed smooth so it is even with the teeth next to it and so it shines like a natural tooth.

Which is Better Cosmetic Bonding or Porcelain Veneers?

Cosmetic bonding and porcelain veneers have their own pros and cons and it will depend on the exact needs of the patient. Cosmetic bonding options are often able to be completed in a single appointment and are less expensive usually. However, cosmetic bonding options can be more prone to damage because the resins they are made out of are not as durable as porcelain. Frequently, patients choose porcelain veneers because they are strong, natural-looking, and will last a long time. The doctor can help you decide so you are sure to get the best treatment for your needs.
