Root Canal Q & A

What is an Endodontist?

Endodontists are dentists who have been trained to address concerns regarding the interior of the tooth such as an abscess. Implant placements and restorations, root canals, root canal retreatment, apicoectomies, treatment of chipped or broken tooth, and dental emergencies are all procedures which an endodontist can provide to patients. These procedures are designed to correct any issues which affect the integrity and strength of the tooth and its structure. These procedures tend to be more complex.

When Would I Receive These Treatments?

If you have a tooth ache, need a missing tooth replaced, a chipped or broken tooth repaired, or need treatment for tender or swollen gums you will work with the endodontist. The most common procedure performed by these doctors is the root canal which treated an infected tooth.

What are Root Canals?

When a tooth is abscessed or infected the dentist will perform a root canal to remove the decay and save the tooth from extraction. The inside layer of the tooth located beneath the hard outer layer is a portion of the tooth referred to as the pulp. This pulp houses blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissues which grow the tooth root during its development. The pulp can become irritated or inflamed, usually due to infection, and when this occurs the dentist will perform a root canal. Infections can be the result of chips, decay, faulty crowns, and/or repeated dental procedures. An abscess can form if the infection is not treated and will have to be cleaned out in order to be repaired. Once this decay tissue is removed, the cavity is cleaned to ensure the bacteria are gone. The interior is then repaired by filling it in with a rubber-like substance. A crown or filling is then put over the tooth. These treatments can help to avoid an extraction but they are not suitable for every case. Talk with the doctor about what option will be best for you by visiting the office.
