Teeth Whitening Q & A

What Makes Teeth Turn Yellow?

Teeth to become yellowed because of a variety of reasons. The most common are eating and drinking items such as coffee, berries, tea, etc. which stain teeth. Using tobacco products can yellow teeth quite a bit as well. The discoloration can be fixed by whitening treatment offered at the dentist’s office. Sometimes, though not as often, the staining is internal. This can be caused by a tooth trauma, taking certain medications for a prolonged time, and having a root canal performed. These situations will require deep internal bleaching or the application of a crown or veneer.

Can Whitening My Teeth Damage Them?

A patient’s teeth will not be damaged by treatments used in the dental office. The practice only used proven, tested teeth whitening procedures which are ensured to whiten teeth without any adverse side effects. Some patients report tooth sensitivity after the treatment. However, this is usually minimal and any sensitivity felt can be managed.

What is the Zoom Whitening Procedure Like?

The first thing the dentist will do is examine the patient’s teeth for signs of decay or damage. These will need to be addressed before the whitening is performed. Usually, the dentist will do a quick cleaning on teeth regardless to make sure that the entire tooth is receiving the treatment and not being blocked by any plaque. Then a light activated, hydrogen peroxide gel is applied to each tooth. A special lamp is used with the gel which activates the chemicals which whiten teeth. A lip retainer is used to hold back the patient’s lips so that they do not touch the gel or block the light. The lamp is then directed on the teeth for about 15 minutes. The gel will then be removed and then the lip retainer. Whiter teeth should be visible immediately.
